This is The Bluebeats 3rd full length album, their first two were released on Moon Ska Records. Being one of the main writers of The Scofflaws, Michael Drance went on to form The Bluebeats out of the love of old school traditional 'rocksteady' Jamaican music. Rocksteady bridges the gap between ska music and reggae music. Embracing more of the 'soul' sound, focus on harmonies and vocalizations, with deeper bass and organ sounds and generally slower tempos. This album, Respect Due, is a tribute to all the great soul ska rocksteady bands that influenced the Bluebeats directly and so many other bands around the world.
Some of these songs you may know, others may be a first time. Hopefully this albums makes you hunt down the original cuts and educate yourself on where this sound originates. I think this is one of the strong points of the album, this aren't your typically covered ska/rocksteady tunes that many modern bands have beaten into the ground. The Bluebeats dug deep to bring you a very strong and honestly, moving record. Simple tones, yet deep sounds and a very cohesive play from beginning to end.
We are more than happy to have The Bluebeats on Megalith Records. We strive for quality over quantity here, and this is one of the best 'ska' genre albums of the first decade in the 2000's. If you know the Bluebeats, this album will not disappoint, if you are new to their sound, get ready to take a trip back in time to the time of the land of real ska music!
