After just completing their "Kingston Kitchen" record (of which they teamed up with long time friend and ska 'big man' Dr. Ring Ding) RSJF went back into the studio to bring us their second full length effort with Megalith Records. For a band that has only been around for just over six years, they sure have made a mark on the scene. With a handful of LPs, CDs, EPs and 7inches, they are one loco-motiv train to ska-ville that shows no evidence of running out of 'steam' anytime soon.
Improving (if that is even possible!) on the standards they set up on 'Sunwalk' as well as taking their sound in new directions, this latest record is a real ska fan's dream come true. You hear all this talk about 'real Jamaican ska' and all of these bands that claim to be 'traditional' ska bands, yet none of them seem to capture the technical skills and instrumentation that it takes to be a group of top notch musicians like Rotterdam. If these guys all don't have degrees in music theory and classical training, then they must have had some great inspiration teachers and a lot of time on their hands. If you just close your eyes while you listen you might just find yourself transported to a time when musicians played in small smokey clubs to a group of onlookers that really really loved music. Creating music for themselves and to push the limits of what they can physically accomplish. That is was embodies RSJF. True jazz artists with extensive knowledge of the roots of ska.
