The Bluebeats - “Respect Due…”
The Bluebeats third release “Respect Due…” is a cover album of mostly obscure early Jamaican reggae, rocksteady, and R&B songs.
I’ve never been a big fan of “cover” songs or “cover” albums, but this album is very good. Honestly, most of the songs on this album I had never heard before. After some research, I discovered that the Bluebeats matched the aura and the sound created by the original songs, but added their own flavor. They did it with tact and “respect,” making this album very good.
This is a type of album that you could listen to in almost every setting. It would sound as good at a party, on a long drive through the countryside, or sitting in traffic on the Long Island Expressway. It is a relaxing, melodic traditional reggae and ska album. If this is your style, pick it up. It’s worth it.
